Recipe: Oreo Snowballs

Every year around the holidays, my mom and I gather up all of our favorite holiday baking recipes and get to work. Since I can remember, it has been a tradition for my mom to make her standard holiday cookies such as: peanut blossoms, peanut clusters, italian cookies, and more. As I have gotten older, I have been able to create and master my own additions to our annual baking recipes. One of my favorite recipes in particular that I have been able to contribute to our inventory is my Oreo snowballs.

Now, the great thing about Oreo snowballs is that they are both tasty and easy to make. Anything that is easy to make and holiday-related is a winner in my book. Oreo snowballs also don’t have to be just a Christmas/holiday recipe, they can be used as a seasonal recipe, or even year-round – if you so desire. The basic Oreo snowball consists of two easy base ingredients, Oreos and cream cheese, and one aesthetic ingredient, white candy coating. The taste of each snowball is essentially what I presume an Oreo cake ball would taste like – delicious.

For this recipe, I use my stand mixer to blend together the crushed Oreos and softened cream cheese, but any mixer (or even a blender!) will do the job just as well.

Once everything is blended together, then comes the messier part of this recipe – rolling the sticky mix into balls. This part of the recipe can also be embellished in any way you choose, depending on how many snowballs you want to make. Personally, I tend to make each of my snowballs about the size of a walnut, which gets me about three dozen of them. I have also made each snowball a little smaller than that when I’ve wanted to create a greater portion – it is entirely up to you.

After rolling up each ball and letting them chill in the fridge, I dip the snowballs into the melted white candy coating. This part of the recipe can also be altered to your convenience as I have seen people use white chocolate almond bark, and other various candy coatings before. I tend to stick with Candiquik candy coating, vanilla flavor for the white coloring, as it’s cheap and painless to use.

The candy coating is the quickest part of this recipe because once you’re done dipping each snowball, the coating only takes minutes to fully set. After dipping all of the snowballs, all you have to do is wait about ten minutes or so before your Oreo snowballs are done and ready to be served!

Oreo Snowballs

Ingredients

  • 1 (16 oz.) package of Oreo cookies, crushed
  • 1 (8 oz.) package of cream cheese, softened
  • 1 (16 oz.) package of Candiquik vanilla candy coating (or other alternative coating, if desired)

Directions

  1. Mix together the crushed Oreos and softened cream cheese in a mixer until completely mixed.
  2. Roll small portions of the mix into walnut-sized balls (or smaller, if necessary), and place onto tray(s) covered with wax paper.
  3. Put your tray(s) into the refrigerator to chill for one hour.
  4. Remove tray(s) from the fridge to prepare for dipping.
  5. Break up pieces of Candiquik and put into microwave-safe bowl, then microwave for one minute (and 15 seconds more each time until all coating is melted).
  6. Once coating is ready for dipping, use toothpicks to dip each snowball into the coating and put back onto the wax paper tray(s) to set.
  7. After every snowball is completely set (can take up to 10 minutes), they’re done and ready to serve!
